Welcome to the real world, Mother Robot, a beautiful and dangerous place. Now you can truly begin to live.

Tony DiTerlizzi
About This Quote

When Roy Batty, the famous android of Blade Runner, says this to Rachael, his creator’s girlfriend, he is asking her to leave behind the protected world of the synthetic and enter a world in which she will have to face danger and death. And in a sense, he is asking her to stop being a woman and to become a robot, since she will have to die just as all women do in order to have their children. This quote is an admonition from Batty to Rachael not to be lulled into a false sense of security by the comforts of civilization. In other words, it is a warning against becoming complacent in thinking that life in the world is safe. Batty reminds Rachael that when she comes out of hiding and enters the real world where death awaits, she can no longer rely on her artificial beauty and must instead depend on her own skills and abilities.
